Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 and died on August 16, 1977. His father, Vernon Elvis Presley, and his mother, Gladys Love Smith met in the city of Tupelo, Mississippi and they eloped to Pontotoc County and were married on June 17, 1933. Elvis was born in a two room house that had been built by his father. Elvis had an identical twin brother that was named Jesse Garon, but he was stillborn at birth. He was very close to both of his parents as an only child, but was especially close to his mother. Vernon was incarcerated for a period of time, and Gladys and Elvis lost their home and then had to move in with relatives. In 1942, Elvis started elementary school, where he was described as a quiet and well mannered boy who sometimes was bullied.
In 1945, it was suggested that Elvis participate in a singing contest. Elvis was dressed up like a cowboy and had to stand on a chair, singing "Old Shep" by Red Foley. He came in fifth place and he won $5.00 as well as a ticket to the rides. When he was eleven years old, his parents bought him a guitar, even though his first choice was a rifle. In 1948, the family, including his uncle and his family, moved to Memphis, Tennessee. This is also because he had to escape the law because he was transporting bootleg liquor. They found a home at a boarding house where they had to share a bathroom with three other families, and then a place on Adams Street. They applied for assistance from welfare and after receiving a visit from the Memphis Housing Authority inspector in 1949, they moved to a public housing development in a poor area. While living there, Elvis practiced playing the guitar in the laundry room as well as a five piece band with the other tenants. In order to boost the family's income, Presley began to work evenings as an usher at a theater in September of 1950. Soon his mother made him quit because she felt like it was affecting his education. He began wearing flashy and wild clothing and was picked on for it. Elvis began visiting record stores and listening to jukeboxes. He frequented venues with blues music, rhythm & blues, and hillbilly music. Presley did not know how to read music and was untrained. He simply played by ear.
Elvis Presley started his career in 1954 and was one of the first performers of rockabilly music, which was considered an uptempo fusion of rhythm and blues, country, and with a strong back beat. He mixed black and white sounds. His performances also caused controversy. He also had a voice that was rather versatile and he was able to find musical success with a number of musical genres, including gospel, country, blues, rock and roll, ballads, and pop. At this point, Elvis has already been inducted into four music halls of fame. He made movies in Hollywood and had a number of successful tours around the country, especially in Las Vegas, including later on in his career. He staged the first global live concert that occurred via satellite in 1973, which reached over a billion viewers live and 500 million more views at a delayed time. It is still today the most watched broadcast of one entertainer in the history of television. During his career, Elvis was able to set records for attendance at concerts, recording sales, and ratings for television performances. He continues to be one of the best selling of solo artists in music history, and has sold better 600 million and a billion around the world. He is considered an icon in popular culture. He has been nominated for 14 Grammy awards and won three. He also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award when he was 36 years old.
Much has been said about Elvis's relationship with Priscilla. They met in 1959 in Germany while he was in the army. He was twenty-four years old, while she was only 14. They soon began a romantic relationship and were often together until Elvis left Germany in 1960. Elvis would not have sexual intercourse with her until their marriage. Priscilla and Elvis maintained contact through the phone, but did not come face to face again until the summer of 1962, when her parents agreed to let her visit him for two weeks. After she visited a second time at Christmas, her parents allowed her to move to America permanently. The agreement made was that she would be educated privately, finish her senior year of high school, and live with Elvis's father and his stepmother Dee in their home. However, since Elvis was not on good terms with his stepmother, he arranged for them to live in a separate home on the estate of Graceland. Priscilla's parents would only allow her to live at Graceland if Elvis made a promise to marry her. Soon she was moved into Graceland. Close to Christmas time in 1966, Elvis proposed to Priscilla, and they were married on May 1, 1967 at the Aladdin Hotel located in Las Vegas. They had an eight year courtship. The couple had one child, Lisa Marie, who was born on February 1, 1968.
Elvis and Priscilla eventually were divorced. They had become distant due to him being away so much on the road. It was reported that he had been unfaithful before marriage and after. However, when he learned that Priscilla had been unfaithful, he was extremely angry. They separated on February 23, 1972 after they had been together for 13 years. They were officially divorced on October 9, 1973, and they agreed to shared custody of Lisa Marie. After Elvis separated from his wife, he also had relationships with Linda Thompson and Ginger Alden.
By 1977, Elvis was having some health concerns. He was having difficulty making it through a concert. He was very nervous on stage and not at all like his old self. He gave his last performance in Indianapolis on June 26, 1977. Another tour was scheduled to begin soon, but Presley was found unresponsive on the floor of his room and could not be resuscitated. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis right next to his mother. His remains and the remains of his mother have since been reburied at Graceland.
